A phrase from Trevor Wishart’s Audible Design has been echoing in me: “Humility in the face of experience.”
Life is finite. Yet there are no bounds to the diversity of experience: a vast, unpredictable, potentially infinite domain. Exploration is not a luxury, but a necessity.
As we engage with the world, we draw from our lived past while staying open to surprise, error, and the unwilled. We unearth the sublime, the messy, the unexpected.
Humility in the face of experience becomes essential.
Not passivity.
Not bowing to dogma, authority, or the wisdom of the crowd.
But the courage to accept that the world exceeds our plans. The strength to release control, and instead listen to reality rumbling before us.
Humility is respect — for the otherness of things, and for people.
Experience humbles: it reveals our limits, our dependence. The healthy response is social interest — engaging constructively, not retreating into arrogance or inferiority.
To live with humility in the face of experience is to let the world exceed us — and in it so doing to change us. A genuine Opening Toward The World.
